After receiving egg from female it is important fertilize it with male sperms in lab within this process. After that the fertilized egg is monitored for 40 hours in lab. If fertilization process occur successfully than next step is to transfer embryo to uterus of woman. This process can take 2 to 3 days.

Embryo is transferred to uterus of women with help of two procedures:

  • Frozen embryo transfer
In this method more than 2 embryos of woman is acquired and freeze. This process is used for woman who suffer infertility problem and fear that implantation of first embryo can result in failure. In that case frozen embryo is used and transferred.
  • Blastocyst transfer
This method is used after five days of fertilization and at this stage the embryo is cultured further and reaches to stage known as blast cyst. At this stage it is easier to determine health of embryo and then it is transferred to uterus of female.

In most of cases pre-implantation genetic diagnosis is also conducted. This can help to test genetic makeup of child and transmission of any genetic diseases or problems can be avoided which can also help to reduce chances of miscarriage.

Although this process is as vulnerable as natural pregnancy and any problem can occur in any stage of this process. However, two or more than 2 embryos are implanted in woman to increases chances of successful pregnancy.

Although chances of miscarriages within in vitro fertilization process is same as natural pregnancy but with multiple implantation this chance can be reduced to some limit. Another complication of ectopic pregnancy is also presided in this process. This is serious medical problem where growth of embryo takes place outside the uterus. In this condition survival of embryo is impossible. Therefore, it is advisable that patients seeking treatment of in vitro fertilization should discuss their complete medical history with doctors.
